New post on my blog: The Paris-style vintage clothing salon to the stars
Famous for their all-inclusive, four-point price tag system
Playclothes is set in a Victorian-style buildingwith high
elegant ceilings and glows with the light of neon signs that flicker
"Prescriptions" and "Cosmetics."
The most sentimental reads: "Moorpark Pharmacy"
and is an homage to their previous location in Moorpark. Mannequins, from busts
to full-sized, are situated around the store.
The most fascinating is a seated brunette with her hand on one hip who looks like a stood up, pissed off girlfriend. prom dresses for large bust
Playclothes is particularly popular for their wide range of
fashions that span nearly a century, from the 1920s through the 1990s. Unlike a
lot of vintage stores that carry a disproportionate amount of the
easier-to-find 1970s-90s fashions, Playclothes carries a large selection of
1940s and '50s ensembles.
Especially popular with the gals trying on crinolines and
petticoats is the luxurious, large fitting room described as an "1800s
powder room." It is pink with framed floral paintings and prints on the
walls, with a well-stocked shoe and dress rack, and a comfy couch covered in
plush pillows for lounging between rounds.
The fashions themselves are arranged on racks by decades
making things easy to find. Shopper Lizzy loves that "Each clothing item
has a tag which labels its decade, a brief description, as well as its price
and modern-day size equivalent."
Although the owner may dispute it, Playclothes really is not
for everyone, especially considering that the dresses from the earlier decades,
1920s through 1940s, tend to stop at around a size 8. But that hasn't stopped
curvier girls from making some great buys.
Some shoppers come into the store for inspiration and
accessories and then actually commission a seamstress to make them a dress to
match.
Although the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, they
don't follow you through the store or breathe down your neck. They leave that
to their popular shop kitty, Tiger Lily, the de facto store detective.
With Halloween around the corner, Playclothes is stocking up
on costumes from all the eras since it is the first stop for many looking for
an era-specific ensemble, whether its 1920s flapper or 1980s prom date.
Owner Wendy Soileau
became famous at the Cranberry House
in Studio City where she had a large space dedicated to high-end vintage
clothing. She also hosted two runway shows that ran up and down the staircase.
The first one was dedicated to 1920s through 1940s fashion, while the second
one focused on vintage bridal.
